UNDERSTANDING MTSD MILESTONES FOR SUCCESS IN COLLEGE.

"MISINFORMATIONGATE?" WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING?

Today, a member of the recall effort stated on a Milwaukee radio program that ONLY 56% of MTSD 3rd-8th graders are proficient in math. This is incorrect.

TRUTH: A majority of our 3rd-8th graders are scoring in the top 30% of students nationally in math skills and top 34% in reading. This, despite losing 1/3 of the year to COVID in 2019-20 and a 2020-21 hybrid classroom (big asterisks to scores for all schools). So, to the contrary, MTSD students are actually performing quite well and have been for a while.

Specifically, what MTSD reports in MILESTONE 3 is in 2020-21, 56% of MTSD 3rd-8th graders meet MILESTONE 3, meaning they scored better than 70% of students nationally on math MAP testing. Studies show the top 30% of students in math is the predictor level for success in college. This figure has remained stable since 2015-16. *

Similarly, for MILESTONE 2 in 2020-21, 58% of MTSD 3rd-8th graders met MILESTONE 2, meaning they scored better than 66% of students nationally on reading MAP testing, demonstrating reading skills that predict success in college. This figure has remained stable since 2016-17.

These explanations are easily discoverable and understandable on MTSD's website. https://www.mtsd.k12.wi.us/district/commitments/milestones
